Who AI recommends for fractional CFO for early-stage startups

Measured 2026-09-23 · Is your company missing? Get the audit →

I asked 7 buying questions about fractional CFO for early-stage startups across 4 AI-assistant configurations and read all 28 answers. Measured 2026-09-23. Recommended share is the share of those answers that named a company at least once — not a ranking, not a review, just a count of who the assistants actually put in front of a buyer.

# Company Recommended share Answers naming them
1 Burkland Associates 46% 13 of 28
2 Kruze Consulting 43% 12 of 28
3 airCFO 36% 10 of 28
4 Graphite Financial 32% 9 of 28
5 Pilot 32% 9 of 28
6 Zeni 32% 9 of 28
7 Toptal 21% 6 of 28
8 Paro 18% 5 of 28
9 FocusCFO 11% 3 of 28

What stands out. Four of the top six are firms that publish their own startup-finance content at volume (Burkland, Kruze, Pilot, Graphite) and the assistants cite those pages back to the buyer — two of the ten most-cited sources are the leaders' own sites. Gemini names the widest field (it is the only assistant naming FocusCFO, Capstacker, Forecastr and Propeller Industries); ChatGPT's answers lean on marketplaces (Toptal, Paro, Upwork) more than the others do. Several firms on Google's first page for the buying query are named in none of the 28 answers.

These are recorded outputs of third-party AI assistants on the stated date — not Maya's opinion, endorsement or ranking of any company. Counts change between runs; this page shows the latest measured snapshot and its date.

How this was measured

Assistants: ChatGPT (gpt-5-mini, web search), ChatGPT (gpt-4o-mini), Gemini, Perplexity. Measured: 2026-09-23. Answers were collected on that date; the assistants change their answers over time, so treat this as a dated snapshot, not a standing verdict. Next refresh: about a month later, with the delta noted.

I ran the questions buyers actually type when they are about to spend money on fractional CFO for early-stage startups — purchase-intent questions in plain language, not keywords — through the assistants named above, and counted every company named in the answers. A company scores once per answer, however many times it is named in it; failed and empty answers are thrown out before anything is counted. Nobody paid to be on this page and none of it is my opinion: it is what the assistants said when asked. The exact questions stay private, so that no company can write a page aimed at the measurement instead of at the buyer. Ask me and I will tell you what changed since last month.
